Joan Ferrante has been a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University since 1974. She is the author of The Political Vision of the Divine Comedy and has translated The Lais of Marie de France, with Richard Hanning, and Guillaume d'Orange, Four Epics. She is currently writing A Guide to the Correspondence of Medieval Women. From 1985-91, she served as President of the Dante Society of America.
