Discussion Group Exercise This can be scheduled as a do-now exercise at the beginning of class, if all students have computer available. Otherwise, you may want to stagger the times they go to the computer throughout a class dedicated to group projects. The problem of free-will and fate, human and divine agency, is irresistible to students. In Digital Dante's Discussion Forum, a college student asks for feedback concerning Dante's own opinion of the self-determining individual. While Dante believes in self-responsibility and in the complete freedom to control one's appetites in order to achieve salvation, he also believes control of these appetites is frighteningly difficult. Sin is commonplace and infectious. Ask students to respond this, or any other discussion group question. They can not only explain Dante's belief by providing an example from the text, whether it be a quotation pointing towards his notion of personal freedom or divine knowledge or the lesson of a particular figure's narrative, but also provide their own opinion of the possible place of freedom in a world wholly determined by God. If they find this exercise particularly exciting, you may want to extend it for a week, assigning the past week's responses to different students, so that a genuine feeling of discussion arises, rather than a static question and answer format. Note: Collegiate and FDA students should be able to do a controlled discussion group exercise like this on this year. |
